Why did I wanted to watch it?
First episode of the The Up series. Next: 📺 7 Plus Seven.
“The Up series” is a documentary that follow the lives of the same people from different backgrounds of the UK across decades. The premise is to have a glimpse at the future of the UK by the year 2000. They quote Aristotle:
Give me a child until he is seven and I will give you the man.
To be honest… I’m not entirely sure why I wanted to watch this! I guess it’s on the topic of Life well lived.
What did I get out of it?
At 7, they already have stark differences because of their background that are setting them up for life.
You can see this difference in what they do in school and back home. The kids from richer backgrounds have more structure in their activities, whereas the poor ones have more freedom. The narrator says the majority of them know little about discipline but a few of them are already being trained to accept it.
For example, there is a kid that is already reading the Financial Times and following its family stocks.
Another “fun” example was when they were asked how do they feel about fighting. A rich kid says: “we don’t do much fighting here, they [the teachers] think it’s horrible”. But one of the poor kids say “I always feel like bundling when there is a fight”.
